The piano piece is inspired by the novel-biography SCHUBERT by Peter Härtling (1992), where he describes how the composer is consumed with love for the singer Therese Grob and stands nightly in the courtyard under her window. Verbatim quotation from Härtling's novel (page 91): "There his wild fantasies rage, and he stands miserably bent in the nocturnal courtyard, satisfying himself."
It is an obscure night music with wild and tragic despair, and a love melody in the middle part.

Introduction: The piano piece is inspired by the novel-biography SCHUBERT by Peter Härtling (1992), where he describes how the composer is consumed with love for the singer Therese Grob and stands nightly in the courtyard under her window. Verbatim quotation from Härtling's novel (page 91): "There his wild fantasies rage, and he stands miserably bent in the nocturnal courtyard, satisfying himself."
It is an obscure night music whose wild and tragic despair leads into a theme of longing in the middle section, the "Kyrie" of Mass No. 1 in F major D 105. It is, so to speak, a beautiful "mercy" music from Schubert's very first composition. Franz Schubert had composed these melodies for his adored Therese Grob (1798-1875), who then sang them as a soloist at the premiere of the Mass in the Lichtenthal parish church in Vienna when she was 16. So one hears an absolutely authentic love melody. The Notturno begins misterioso, agitato, sombre and desperate, exposing in the middle the bright F major of Mass No. 1 ...After the middle section, the Notturno disintegrates again into dark pain. Franz Schubert died at 31 with unrequited love and little recognition. Even many of his most incredible works, such as the Unfinished Symphony No. 8 in B minor, he was never allowed to hear... For me, it is an unparalleled tragedy that such a genius was denied resonance - and also love - during his lifetime.
