Sie ist mir lieb, die werte Magd
und kann ihr nicht vergessen,
Lob, Ehr und Zucht von ihr man sagt,
sie hat mein Herz besessen.
Ich bin ihr hold,
und wenn ich sollt
groß Unglück han,
da liegt nicht an;
sie will mich des ergetzen
mit ihrer Lieb und Treu an mir,
die sie zu mir will setzen
und tun all mein Begier.
Sie trägt von Gold so rein ein Kron,
da leuchten inn zwölf Sterne,
ihr Kleid ist wie die Sonne schon,

Introduction: Martin Luther's „Lied von der Heiligen Christlichen Kirchen, aus dem 12. Kapitel Apokalypsis“ (Song of the Holy Christian Church, from the 12th chapter Apocalypsis) was first printed in the 'Klugsches Gesangbuch' (1535) and is a late church hymn with a uniquely artistic verse scheme.
Its subject is the prophetic vision of the „apocalyptic woman“ from the revelations of John. The woman in this puzzling and mysterious text is a reference to the mother of Jesus, Virgin Mary. However, it is not a one-dimensional adoration of the Virgin Mary. Instead, Mary is a symbol of the entire church. „The woman“ represents the church of God in many verses of the Bible: in the Old Testament, the people of Israel, in the New Testament, the spiritual Israel, and later on the Christian church: the number twelve for the stars therefore symbolises the twelve tribes of Israel and the twelve apostles. The star crown is a sign of completeness and royal dignity.
Martin Luther's song utilises the intensive images of the sun, the moon, and the dragon (metaphor for satan) and describes his vision for the future church. The song rarely adopted, although its formality, language and level of mystery make it one of his best compositions.
This musical composition does not refer to the historic melodic drafts. Only in one passage „Ich bin ihr hold...“ (I am lovely to her ...), the musical composition of Michael Praetorius of the year 1610 was quoted to recreate some of the aura of the 450-year-old song.

Die Frau und der Drache
1 Und es erschien ein großes Zeichen im Himmel: ein Weib, mit der Sonne bekleidet, und der Mond unter ihren Füßen und auf ihrem Haupt eine Krone mit zwölf goldenen Sternen. 2 Und sie war schwanger und schrie in Kindesnöten und hatte große Qual zur Geburt.
3 Und es erschien ein anderes Zeichen im Himmel, und siehe, ein großer, roter Drache, der hatte sieben Häupter und zehn Hörner und auf seinen Häuptern sieben Kronen; 4 und sein Schwanz zog den dritten Teil der Sterne des Himmels hinweg und warf sie auf die Erde. Und der Drache trat vor das Weib, die gebären sollte, auf daß, wenn sie geboren hätte, er ihr Kind fräße.
5 Und sie gebar einen Sohn, ein Knäblein, der alle Heiden sollte weiden mit eisernem Stabe. Und ihr Kind ward entrückt zu Gott und seinem Stuhl. 6 Und das Weib entfloh in die Wüste, wo sie einen Ort hat, bereitet von Gott, daß sie daselbst ernährt würde tausend zweihundertundsechzig Tage.
